Two cops injured, dragged 20 metres in hit and run accident in Kishangarh

Two Delhi traffic police personnel were injured in a hit and run accident after they tried to stop a car for jumping the signal while on duty in southwest Delhi’s Kishangarh area.      

In a video surfacing on the internet, two police officers can be seen on the bonnet of a white coloured car (DL 9 CBC 7528) while they tried to stop it from evading prosecution. However, the car speeds up in second, dragging them for about 20 minutes and injuring the officers on duty.

According to the police on Sunday, the incident occurred on Saturday evening at around 7.45 pm at the Ber Sarai traffic light near Vedant Deshika Marg. "On Saturday, a PCR call was received at the Kishan Garh police station stating that an unknown vehicle had hit traffic officers on duty and fled the scene," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Surendra Chowdhary.

He said that in the meantime, a team was immediately sent to the spot and it found that the two injured personnel had been rushed to Safdarjung Hospital by a PCR van. The team reached the hospital and found Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Pramod and Head Constable Sailesh Chouhan were in a conscious and stable condition.

According to their statements, they were conducting routine challans for traffic violations when at around 7.45 pm, a vehicle jumped the red light. “Thereafter statement of ASI Pramod was recorded wherein he has alleged that on Saturday he along with HC Sailesh (Vasant Vihar Traffic Circle) was doing Mobile prosecution challan on Vedant Deshika Marg (Ber Sarai market Road) and around 07.45 PM a Car No DL-9C-BC-7528 jumped the red light and came towards them,” the DCP stated.

At first, when HC Sailesh signaled the car to stop, the driver did initially compile. However, when the officer asked the driver to come out of the car, the driver tried to run away from the spot and dragged them for about 20 meters on the car and later hit them and ran away from the spot.

"Both of them received minor injuries in the accident. A crime and forensic team inspected the area where the incident occurred,” another police officer said, adding that as per the statement given by the officers, the alleged car driver had created obstruction in the official duty and had further tried to kill the above police officials by dragging them on his car for over 20 meters.  

“A case under attempt to murder and obstruction in discharge of official duty and charges for endangering the lives of public has been registered," said the officer.

An FIR was registered on Sunday under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 221 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 3(5) (joint liability).

“Search of the offending vehicle and accused is being made. The offending vehicle is found registered on the name of Jai Bhagwan, resident of Vasant Kunj. Further investigation is going on,” the officer said.
